Cornelius J. Bergen, member of the Bergen family of Long Island, was born at Bay Ridge in 1814. Cornelius J. died in 1884. He had atwin brother, Alexander J. Bergen. In their early years they were engaged in the grocery business on Fulton street, near the Fulton Ferry. Later they became interested in real estate. Both spent some years in Europe.

Cornelius J. Bergen is listened as 1st Lieutenant as of May 31, 1864, in the Infantry, living in Brooklyn (Annual Report of the Adjutant General of the State of New York, Volume I, of 1865, page 128).
